An infrared spectroscopic study of the rotation of methane in solid nitrogen

Infrared spectra of CH4, CH3D, and CD4 in solid nitrogen have been recorded with 0.05 cm−1 resolution at temperatures between 5.5 and 20 K. The data show that methane rotates in nitrogen. The proton spin states of CH4 interconvert very slowly at 5.5 K but rapidly at 20 K.
