Abstract

KCl(001) cleavage planes below room temperature physisorb water, detectable by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). Adsorption isobars and isotherms on that single cyrstal plane were measured with static SIMS and used as a monitor of surface coverage. Using the Langmuir model for the physisorption of H2O to KCl(001), a quantitative determination of relative surface coverage is achieved. Coverages as low as 10−5 of a monolayer could be measured. At a surface temperature TSF=150 K and a partial pressure of water pH2O=1×10−8 Torr, the coverage is one ordered monolayer. The adsorption energy of H2O on KCl(001) is (430±30) meV.
