Abstract

<jats:p>The Korteweg-de Vries equation is shown to govern long nonlinear waves which propagate along the rotation axis in inviscid incompressible fluids. The main stream may have an arbitrary swirl profile. Both axisymmetric and spiralling waveforms are possible.</jats:p>
