Stability of Flow Induced by an Impulsively Started Rotating Cylinder

A Taylor-type instability has been found in the flow field of an impulsively started rotating cylinder in a large tank of water. Photographs showing the growth of the ``instability disks'' and the experimentally determined neutral stability curve are presented.
