Vibration Treatment of Metals

The treatment of solid and liquid metals by elastic vibrations is discussed. Particular attention is paid to the electrodynamic method in which the alternating field of a coreless induction furnace has a strong static magnetic field superimposed on it, so that the molten metal under treatment, itself becomes the sonic transducer with the production of radially directed vibrations. An expression is derived for the acoustic efficiency of this arrangement. Various special designs are described.
