<jats:title>ABSTRACT</jats:title> <jats:p> Investigation of the diversity of <jats:italic>nirK</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>nirS</jats:italic> in denitrifying bacteria revealed that salinity decreased the diversity in a nitrate-containing saline wastewater treatment system. The predominant <jats:italic>nirS</jats:italic> clone was related to <jats:italic>nirS</jats:italic> derived from marine bacteria, and the predominant <jats:italic>nirK</jats:italic> clone was related to <jats:italic>nirK</jats:italic> of the genus <jats:italic>Alcaligenes</jats:italic> . </jats:p>
