Studies of Gonadal Steroids Involved in Final Gonadial Maturation in the Japanese Eel, <i>Anguilla japonica</i>, a Review

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Vitellogenesis in females and spermatogenesis in males were stimulated by exogeneous gonadotropic preparations. However, the subsequent oocyte maturation and spermiation did not advance because of the insuffiency of circulating 17α, 20β‐dihydroxy‐4‐pregnen‐3‐one (17α, 20β‐diOHprog). At the time of maturation, the injection of 17α, 20β‐diOHprog induced oocyte maturation and ovulation in females and spermiation (increase in volume of seminal plasma and acquisition of sperm motility) in male. These results suggest strongly that 17α, 20β‐diOHprog play a key role in the final maturation of the Japanese eel.</jats:p>
