Abstract

The NOx emissions are the major cause of the acid rain. The NOx emissions could be also reduced by discharge. In this paper, the optimum conditions of NOx removal by superimposing surface and silent discharges are proposed.
Amplified AC 50 Hz high voltage is applied to the reactor to superimpose both the surface and silent discharges. The phase difference of applied voltage between surface and silent discharges is led every 30° from 0° to 360°, and thereby the different phase characteristic is measured. The absorption spectrum of enclosed gas is continuously measured by with Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) every two minutes. The rate of NO2 reduction is calculated and analyzed with the absorption spectrum.
The optimum condition is observed at in phase (phase difference is 0°), when the phase difference of applied voltage between surface and silent discharges is gradually led. The worst condition is observed at out of phase (phase difference is 180°). When phase difference is in phase, the superimposed discharge affects a higher rate of NO2 reduction than either when a only surface or a only silent discharge is applied with the same power as the superimposed discharge. This results show that the synergistic effect on the reduction of NO2 by superimposing surface and silent discharges
