Abstract

Molten calcium chloride is one of the suitable media for reduction of oxides when it coexists with metallic calcium. It dissolves about 4 mol% Ca and 20 mol% CaO, which drives calciothermic reduction more effectively. Many reactive metals such as Ti, Ta and Nb could be successively reduced to match with the commercial quality. Diffusion of CaO from the solid layer adhered to the produced metal particles is a key to enhance deoxidation from the metal. The recycling of CaO was proposed using the electrolysis in CaCl2 melt, which was called OS method. In a few hours at 1173 K, a good quality of Ti was formed as powder. The differences between this OS process and FFC process were studied experimentally. MgO or ZrO2 membrane helps to avoid carbon contamination and to increase the current efficiency.
