Abstract

In Thailand, some NGOs that promoted people's participation into urban and rural development were set up around 1992 and participation into development process was institutionalized by the government subsequently. During the Asian economic crisis, some projects that promoted participation into urban and rural development were conducted by international aid agencies and now participation into urban and rural development is becoming widespread. From the analysis of this development process of participatory urban and rural development strategy, the following points are pointed out as characteristics of the development process; 1) participatory urban and rural development strategy is affected by Buddhist thought, 2) Development assistance agencies' support was essential, 3) institutionalization contributed to the durability of the strategy.
