Abstract

application/pdf

This paper presents seismic strengthening performance of beam-to-column connections with non-compression knee-braces. H-columns used in either strong or weak axis and H beams were connected as either fixed or pinned joints. The following conclusions were obtained from loading tests: 1) Both stiffness and strength of the connections with the knee-braces become larger than without the knee-braces. 2) The restoring force characteristics of the connections with the knee-braces become spindle-shaped instead of slip-type. 3) The strength of pinned connections with the knee-braces increases over the maximum strength of the corresponding fixed connections, and so the non-compression knee-braces can be applicable as seismic strengthening members of damaged beam ends in an earthquake.
