The systematic position of Stromateus niger (=Formio niger) is still in confusion.Apsangikar (1953) suggested as follows : "Stromateus niger cannot reasonably be put in the genus Stromateus. Though its affinities with Carangidae are impressive, the differences enumerated show that it is not a typical member of the carangid family. It may sound reasonable therefore to create a new family to include this fish, but under the present circumstances it appears more advisable to place it in the Carangidae."According to Apsangikar this fish differs from the Carangidae in the following three characters: 1)absence of pelvic fins. 2) absence of pre-anal and postanal\nspines. and 3) absence of spinous dorsal. The detailed investigation made by the writer has disclosed that the fish has pelvic fins in young and well developed pelvic girdles in adult. This is considered as a proof that the adult has secondarily lost pelvic-fins. It was also revealed\nthat pre-anal and post-anal spines and spinous dorsal are present in the form of spine beneath the skin. This implies that there is no essential difference between Stromateus niger and the carangid fish. The writer, therefore, considers it is most reasonable to include Stromateus niger in the family Carangdae.
