Abstract

Conducting a discourse analysis of interviews with athletes from the standpoint of gender bias, this article attempts to examine values and meanings which are constructed between information senders and recipients (the audience). A 72-minute recorded questionnaire given to the team members and manager of the Japan women’s national soccer team (in Nadeshiko Japan), the champions of the 2011 World Cup, was analyzed. It is suggested that the mass media has no small effect on promoting and reinforcing perspectives on sports based on traditional sex-role stereotypes.
