Abstract

Group interviews were conducted with twenty-one ward and outpatient nurses in order to clarify the present situation and issues in nursing support for young patients with gynecological cancer. Results showed that the present situation of nursing support can be characterized as follows: "Understanding the background with regards to issues such as partners and desire to have children from the early stages of involvement, in order to predict problems that may arise after treatment"; "Encouraging understanding of the effects of treatment and help with decision-making that patients are satisfied with"; and "Creating an environment in which patients can express their feelings on topics that are difficult to discuss with others". In terms of issues, the following emerged: "Lack of understanding of the needs of patients and their families due to time constraints and lack of coordination"; "Being unable to be fully involved in anguish concerning premature menopause and reproduction"; and "Speculating about the feelings of young patients and being on guard in the construction of a relationship of help". Ways of promoting understanding around issues of the desire to have children from an early stage, promoting decision-making that will not lead to regrets, and encouraging the expression of anguish that cannot be shared with others because of being young seem to be the characteristics of nursing for young patients with gynecological cancer. The study suggested that improvement of nursing support for young patients with gynecological cancer requires constructing of relationships of help with young patients and support aimed at the alleviation of anguish regarding sex.
