With the spread of cellular phones among high school students, its negative impacts related to their health have been realized. The purposes of this study were to develop the scale for measuring the tendency towards dependence on cellular phones of high school students, and to examine the relationships between the tendency towards dependence on cellular phones and the students' use of cellular phones, and the physical and mental subjective symptoms. Five hundred and sixty four high school students answered the questionnaire including the questions about cellular phone use, their tendency towards dependence on cellular phones, the physical and mental subjective symptoms, the poor mood control, and so on.

By the factor analysis with the principal factor method, two factors were extracted, i.e., factor 1; “habitual dependence tendency” and factor 2; “mental dependence tendency”. Factor 1 explains 38.3% of the variance, and factor 2 explains 6.2% of the variance. Eight items that have high factor loading with factor 1, and 5 items that have high factor loading with factor 2 showed high Cronbach a, 0.86 and 0.76, respectively.

The habitual dependence tendency (factor 1) related to the usage of cellular phone for communication, on the other hand, the mental dependence tendency (factor 2) was not related to a specific usage.

The multi-regression analysis showed that the physical subjective symptoms were significantly explained by the habitual dependence tendency (p<0.001) and the mental dependence tendency (p<0.001), when the cellular phone use time, the frequency of sending e-mail, grade and sex were controlled. In the same way, the mental subjective symptoms were significantly explained by the habitual dependence tendency (p< 0.01) and the mental dependence tendency (p<0.001). The mental dependence tendency was especially related to the poor mood control. And, the habitual dependence tendency and the mental dependence tendency were related to total sleep time and self-knowledge of poor sleep.

These results suggest that the tendency towards dependence on cellular phones of high school students consists of two factors; the habitual dependence tendency and the mental dependence tendency, and they are related to the physical and mental subjective symptoms and the poor mood control of high school students.
