Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the effects of multi-generational relationships sustained through Information and Communications Technology (ICT) platforms such as e-mail and social networking sites (SNS) on the feelings of isolation among middle-aged and elderly individuals. We conducted a web-based survey with 900 participants, aged 50–79 years, who lived alone in Tokyo metropolitan area. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that among those in their 50s, building relationships with non-relatives aged 70 years or above through face-to-face and both e-mail and SNS interactions, alleviated their feelings of isolation. The same was found for people in their 60s who built relationships with non-relatives aged 50–60 years, and for those in their 70s who interacted with non-relatives aged 20–40 years. This study suggests that intergenerational exchange that combines face-to-face and ICT platforms is useful to prevent social isolation in local communities.
