Escherichia coli detection was conducted using an optical disk drive tester. A sample of E. coli was mixed in deionized water to obtain an optical density of 0.1 at a wavelength of 600 nm. The solution was dropped onto an oxide-coated disk, on which positioning marks had been made, and dried. Two-dimensional imaging of the E. coli dispersed on the surface was carried out using the marks, and the image obtained was similar to that obtained by an optical microscope. The results indicate that this system can be used to identify the size and number of E. coli.
