ミッドカイン(MK)は、ヘパリン結合性タンパク質であり、様々な癌において高発現していることが知られている。一方、頭頸部癌は、過去30年間で明らかな生存率の改善を認めていない予後不良な疾患である。頭頸部癌の多くを占める口腔扁平上皮癌(OSCC)においてはMKの高発現が報告されているが、唾液腺癌をはじめとした他の頭頸部癌ではMKの発現動態は不明である。また、MKの頭頸部領域の癌の進展におけるその役割には未だ不明な点が多い。そこで、本研究では、頭頸部領域において、特に唾液腺癌およびOSCCを対象として、MKの臨床的意義や機能を明らかにすることを目的とした。
