The frequency of bacteremia among hospitalized patients with liver cirrhosis was 2.3% (132/5854) and the positive rate of blood cultures was 40.5% (132/326). Gram-negative bacteria accounted for 56.8% (79/139) of the microorganisms isolated from blood cultures. Liver dysfunction was significantly more severe in patients with bacteremia than in those without, and the short-term mortality rate of patients with bacteremia was also significantly higher. Liver dysfunction of fatalities with or without bacteremia was significantly more severe than that of survivors with bacteremia. There was no significant difference of liver dysfunction between fatalities with bacteremia and those without. The results suggest that severity of liver dysfunction is an important determinant of short-term mortality in liver cirrhosis patients with bacteremia.
