Twenty-three cases of multiple primary malignant neoplasms experienced during the past five years were reviewed. The age of patients ranged from 37 to 84 years, with an average age of 64.2. This group was composed of twelve male patients and eleven female patients. The mean age of the male group was 66.8 and that of the females was 62.0. The mean age of the patients of single primary neoplasm during the same period was 60.1 in males and 59.8 in females. The age of occurrence of multiple primary malignant neoplasms was higher than that of single malignant lesions both in males and in females. This tendancy was more remarkable in males than in females. Nine patients had lesions that were diagnosed simultaneously and fourteen patients had lesions that were diagnosed at intervals. Urinary tract carcinomas originating in the urinary bladder or kidney appeared in 8 of 12 male patients, and female-specific carcinomas like breast carconoma and cervival carcinoma appeared in 9 out of eleven female patients. Prognosis of simultaneous cases was poorer than that of metachronous cases. Especially stages of gastrointestinal carcinomas involved had a great influence on the prognosis. Nine out of twenty-three patients had relatives within the third degree with malignant neoplasms.
