The reflex control mechanism from the oral mucosa to the levator veli palatini muscle was investigated in decerebrated cats. Motor unit activities in the muscle were recorded electromyographically and mechanical stimulations were applied to the palatal and pharyngeal mucosa.
The results were as follows:
1.Excitatory or inhibitory response was elicited in the levator veli palatini muscle by pressure stimulation to the palatal and pharyngeal mucosa.
2.The reflex thresholds from the oral mucosa were below 10g at the hard palate, 3g at the soft palate, and 5g at the pharyngeal wall.
3.Excitatory reflexes were elicited in the level of low background activity (BGA). The excitatory effect decreased with increase of BGA and the reflex effect changed from excitation to inhibition. In the level of high BGA, the inhibitory effect increased.
4.Reversal levels were calculated from BGA-response curves. As stimulation sites were changed from anterior to posterior in the mouth, the reversal level tended to increase. This result indicated that the excitatory reflex was easily elicited in the posterior portion of the mouth and the inhibitory reflex was easily elicited in the anterior portion of the mouth.
We considered the mechanism of speech aid and palatal lift prosthesis by the analysis of these reflex responses. These nppliances can elicit accurate reflex responses of the levator veli palatini muscle and should function as “Functional velar activator” to activate the velopharyngeal closure.
