Between December, 1964, and November, 1976, 36 patients underwent valve replacement with Starr-Edwards prothesis of several Models: 19 aortic, 16 mitral and one double. The overall operative mortality was 16.7%. Current follow-up was 100% complete. The actuarial survival (± standard error) was 89±4.7% at 5 yeras after operation, 79±7.6% at 10 years, and 69±11.2% at 15 years. The overall incidence of thromboembolic and anticoagulant-related hemorrhagic cocnplicaions was 4.6%/P-Y with a total follow-up of 327.8 patient-years (P-Ys). Three patients of valve dysfunction (0.9%/P-Y) were performed valve re-replacement with all survival. Endocarditis has never occurred. The all valve-related morbidity and mortality was 7.2%/P-Y, and its actuarial free rate was 73±8.1% at 5 years, 58±8.5% at 10 years, and 44±14.2% at 15 years.
