Corrosion tests were conducted for three types of Au-Ag-Pd alloys, containing various amounts of gold (5, 12, and 20% by weight). Half of the specimens of each alloy received homogenizing treatment only; the other half also received age hardening. One specimen of each alloy and each type of treatment was immersed in 1% lactic acid, another specimen in 0.05% HCl, and a third specimen in Ringer's solution. Immersion was for 7 days at 37℃ for all specimens. Quantitative analysis of the metal elements released in the solutions was performed by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP method). The relationship between surface roughness of the specimens and the amounts of released metal was also investigated. The results obtained are as follows. 1. Variation in the amount of gold influenced the amount of copper released into the solution, but had no effect on other elements. 2. Each type of solution exhibited a different mechanism of corrosion. 3. For all three alloys, the surface roughness of the specimen affected the degree of corrosion in Ringer's solution, but not in the acids.
