Abstract
The foreign journals acquired by our library during the seven years from 1987 to 1993 were studied for their adoption of structured abstracts. A total of 56 (9.2%) of the 610 journals were found to have adopted such abstracts. The structured form was adopted as follows: Ann Intern Med (1987), BMJ (1988), Chest, J. Epidemiol. Community Health (1989), followed by three journals in 1990, 10 in 1991, 21 in 1992, and 18 in 1993, showing that the number tended to increase. The 56 journals used a total of 29 headings in 32 patterns. Few journals satisfied all seven headings defined in the guidelines for structured abstracts, and there was no uniform format among the journals. A questionnaire was administered to determine how researchers evaluated the usefulness of structured abstracts. The subjects were 25 basic medical researchers and 25 clinical medical researchers in our university. A higher proportion of clinical researchers regarded the structured abstracts as useful.
