Even though bacterial etiology of adult periodontitis has been investigated for many years, the causative agents have not convincingly been determined. However, the follwing techniques and observations provided evidence that gram negative rods and spirochetes are implicated as etiological agents of periodontitis or, to say the least, peridontitis-related species; recent advance of anaerobic cultivation of microorganism has facilitated to count the bacterial mass in the periodontitis lesions. Analyses of immune response has greatly progressed. Experimental reproduction of periodontitis in the animals has been performed. Outlines of the pathogenic factors including colonization factors, cytotoxity, immunopathological responses, elaborated enzymes (proteases), and metabolic products of these periodontopathogens were reviewed. Furthermore, elastase produced by Prevotella intermedia which was recently characterized by our group was discussed.
