Sixty-three cases of hypopharyngeal cancer were treated in University of Tsukuba Hospital between 1988 and 1998. All cases were pathologically diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma, except one case of anaplastic carcinoma. The mean age was 61.5, and the male-female ratio was 2.7 : 1. The primary lesions were at the piriform sinus in 63.5%, the posterior wall in 25.4% and the postcricoid area in 11.1%. Ninety percent of 63 cases were categorised to be stage III or IV and were mainly treated by surgery combined with FAR therapy. The overall five-year survival rate was 40.8%.
