Abstract
Objectives Fibrin sealants are useful to control bleeding from aortic suture line, but their optimal application is controversial. We conducted this study to clarify how fibrin sealants should be used for hemostasis. Design Nineteen aortomies performed in seven white rabbits were divided into three groups based on the method use to apply fibrin sealant to suture lines: control group (n=7), no sealant; "unclamp" group (n=7), spray application immediately after aortic unclamping ; and "clamp" group (n=5), spray application during aortic clamping. Results The volume of blood loss and the time needed to achieve hemostasis in the clamp group were significantly lower than in both the control and unclamp groups (P<0.05). The clamp group exhibited the best histopathological sealing efficacy compared with the other two groups. Conclusions Fibrin sealant applied during aortic clamping demonstrated good hemostatic efficacy. It also appeared necessary to apply fibrin sealant under decompression.
