The Landolt-Bornstein Comprehensive Index 1950 - 1985 covers all volumes of the 6th edition and the volumes of the NEW SERIES published up to 1985. It contains two separate Indexes - one in German and one in English. Index 1988 meets two needs: 1. For technical reasons the volumes of the NEW SERIES published after 1980 could not be referred to in full detail in the "Comprehensive Index 1985", even if the main keywords of most of the volumes have been included. The present index takes full account of all volumes of the NEW SERIES published up to spring '88 as well as of all volumes of the 6th edition, thus supplementing the "Comprehensive Index 1985" up to date. 2. To facilitate the use of the Landolt-Bornstein volumes the publication of low-priced paper-bound indexes in addition to the large hardcover index seemed advantageous. Such indexes can be brought up-to-date easily and distributed at intervals of a few years thus providing a source of information about the material contained even in the newest volumes of the series. Index 1988 - restricted to an English version - is of this type. It includes a list of the volumes of the 6th edition and of all volumes of the NEW SERIES published so far.

The first Comprehensive Index of the 6th edition and the New Series of Landolt-Bornstein was published in 1986 as a hardbound 300 page volume presenting keyword indexes in English and German. In order to facilitate the use of the Landolt-Bornstein volumes a low-priced paper bound index was published in 1988, covering the volumes of the New Series published up to spring 1988. It was restricted to an English version only. Furthermore the way of presentation was changed. In its new format the Index can be brought up-to-date easily. It is planned to publish such versions every second year. In the present Comprehensive Index 1990 which replaces the Comprehensive Index 1988, keywords have been added for more than 20 volumes published in the last two years or to be published in 1990. Besides, several improvements have been made in the choice of keywords and cross-references, misprints have been deleted and valuable information has been added. The Index consists of four parts. A list of all volumes published in the 6th edition and the New Series, a list of all special indexes provided in individual volumes, the Index of Keywords (comprising more than 100 pages), a list of all authors who have contributed to the 6th edition and the New Series.

The present Comprehensive Index 1996 replaces the Comprehensive Index 1990 and its diskette update Comprehensive Index 1994 on the Landolt-Börnstein Directory Disk 1.1. It covers all volumes - more than 200 - of the New Series and the 6th Edition of LANDOLT-BÖRNSTEIN published up to the end of 1995. The Comprehensive Index consists of three chapters and a guide "How to find Keywords and Volumes", printed on yellow pages. In addition to the individual keywords topical keywords have been included. Also enclosed is a CD-ROM containing not only the full text of the Comprehensive Index 1996, but also the update of the Substance Index 1993.
