Description
The history of printing, books, and libraries, is confined only to a limited extent within the boundaries of individual countries. There are, indeed, few historical developments which have played a more universal role, in reaction against all kinds of particularism, than type design, printing, book production, publishing, illustration, binding, librarianship, journal ism, and related subjects. Their history should be assessed and studied primarily in an international, not in a local, context. The bibliographical resources, however, which the historian of these sub jects has at his disposal correspond hardly at all to the essentially inter national character of the object of his studies. Since the appearance of the retrospective bibliography of BIG MORE and WYMAN, covering the subject comprehensively up to 1880, the only current bibliography has been the lnternatwnale Bibliographie des Buch-und Bi bliothekswesens. Covering a representative part of newly published liter ature, it appeared from 1928, but did not survive the Second World War. More recently, several useful, but limited, bibliographies have appeared.

Description
This third volume of our Annual bibliography of the history of the printed books and libraries contains about 2800 entries and added entries, i.e. some two hundred more than the preceding volume. They have been selected and recorded by the National Committees of the following countries: Austria Ireland (Republic of) Belgium Luxembourg Bulgaria The Netherlands Denmark Norway Finland Poland France Rumania German Democratic Republic South Africa German Federal Republic Switzerland Great Britain USSR Hungary The editor deplores that despite frequent personal and epistolary contact, a number of other countries have up to now failed to join this scheme of international bibliographic collaboration. It should be obvious that their very absence has impaired the coverage of the present bibliography. To infer, however, that it should therefore not be published would imply an underestimation of the domain already covered by the collaborating National Committees. It would also indicate a rather premature pessimism and a certain lack of belief in the possibility of international collaboration. On the contrary, the collaboration of Portugal, Yugoslavia, and of the United States from the next volume onwards, would seem VIII INTRODUCTION to justify the expectation of a gradual enlargement of the geographical coverage of this pUblication. Benevolent readers are requested to signal the names of bibliographers and historians from countries not mentioned above, who would be willing to co-operate. The editor will greatly appreciate any communication on this matter.

Description
This eighth volume of ABHB (Annual bibliography of the history of the printed book and libraries) has been delayed considerably, firstly by economic problems, arising from its low circulation figures, secondly by its automation. None of both problems were easy to tackle. But it is hoped that by now at least the major difficulties have been solved. Certainly, some less elegant alternatives were allowed into this volume, which more or less is to be considered as a trial. We will endeavour to eliminate these peculiarities in the next volumes. Nevertheless, the impatient reader is asked to bear in mind the scale of effort which was accomplished and which includes aspects of automatic indexing, automatic filing, automatic transliteration, automatic layout, and the use of a computerized multi script typography. It is expected that this effort will lead to a more accurate and a more rapid publication of the future volumes. It will allow the members of the National Committees and the Editor to concentrate their attention more on matters of contents. This volume contains about 3200 records, selected from some 1700 periodicals, the list of which follows this introduction.

environment, involved in its production, distribution, conservation, and description. Of course, the ideal of a complete coverage is nearly impossible to attain. However, it is the policy of this publication to include missing items as much as possible in the forthcoming volumes. The same applies to countries newly added to the bibliography. Excluded are books and articles on modern technical processes. The history of techniques not primarily connected with book production is only admitted if the publication in question has a bearing on the history of the book, e.g. engraving is only admitted in its book-illustration context. Only items of a scholarly nature are recorded. Of course, there may be good reasons for including a minor paper on a less well-known person or item; however, the Members of the Editorial Board are requested to avoid reporting a mass of ephemeral and popular literature on the great names of the profession, which adds nothing to our knowledge of the subject. Moreover the subject is limited in time. The terminus a quo is the date of birth of the printed book (Korea, Gutenberg), in the first half of the fif teenth century. Studies on manuscripts, papermaking, bookbinding, etc., prior to that date are not reported. They remain the subject for other bibliographies, such as the Bulletin codicologique, published in Scriptorium. An exception is made in favour of early blockprinting in the Far East and of palaeographical material of importance for the history of type design.
