What George Orwell said, what he wrote and what he stood for remain astonishingly alive. Hardly a day passes without Orwell's words or his ghost being invoked: 'Big Brother'; 'doublethink'; 'Orwellian'. Dr Davidson has, in the first nine volumes, returned to Orwell's manuscripts and edited the fiction and non-fiction to what Orwell intended. Similary authoritative texts make up vols. 10-20, which attempt to print all that it has been possible to recover that Orwell wrote. They have full textual explanations and annotations and include seven hundred-odd reviews, political articles, letters, essays and material from Orwell's days at the BBC. Included in the latter are broadcasts covering drama, modern poetry, film, psychology and important programmes on the contemporary problem of India. Each volume includes an index, and there is a cumulative index in Volume 20.
