This book explores very carefully the universal principles of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics which provide a firm foundation for understanding how the theory can be applied to a multitude of situations arising in physics and engineering. A variety of such applications to gases, crystals, magnets, etc are developed to illustrate general methods of analysis in this area, providing the reader with all the background knowledge he will need to continue with any specific topic in greater depth. Professor Lawden has had considerable experience in teaching this subject to university students of varied abilities, and is therefore able to identify concepts and arguments which cause special difficulty. Such sections are presented with particular care. The student can also supplement his understanding of the text by working through the numerous exercises provided.
