内容説明
The concepts of freedom and equality lie at the heart of much contemporary political debate. In this book Richard Norman examines differing views of how these concepts are to be understood, and asks whether they represent desirable political values. Professor Norman begins from the premise that there is a real and objective content to the ideas of freedom and equality because they are rooted in human experience. He argues that they are the product of people's attempts to give expression to their shared aspirations, to articulate the limitations and frustrations of existing social life, and to envisage alternatives to their present condition. The attempt to clarify these concepts becomes, therefore, not just a matter of practical politics, for the philosophical conclusions we reach have important implications for the day-to-day world of political action. What emerges from this discussion is a careful and detailed philosophical argument which requires no prior knowledge on the part of the reader, and serves as a valuable introduction to the central issues in political philosophy. Readership: first-degree students of philosophy, political philosophy, politics, and social policy.
