Description
Founded by Solon and remodelled by Cleisthenes, the boule was an important legislative council of ancient Greece which acted as a standing committee of the Athenian assembly. This book begins with a detailed account of the members and organization of the council, and then goes on to examine its legislative, administrative, and judicial functions. A concluding chapter summarizes the history of the boule and assesses its key role in the machinery of the Athenian state.
