The purpose of this volume is to inform the agricultural and scientific community of the outcome of the meeting of the British Society for Plant Pathology held at Leeds, which was the first attempt to bring together international experts in the population dynamics and population genetics of plant pathogens. The book is unique in assembling many different ideas and concepts in the population biology of plant pathogens which are relevant to the long-term development of rational methods of disease control in major crops. Deficiencies in our understanding arising through lack of appropriate theory or inadequacy of the available data are identified, and the practical applications being developed and case studies with particular pathosystems are described.
