The American Political Process examines the democratic character of government and politics in the United States. It explores the American political culture, with its inherent tensions; examines the principal institutions; and analyses public policy-making using a case-study of the formulation of foreign policy. The political culture of the US, since the inception of the Republic, has been explicitly and almost exclusively that of a liberal democracy. The absence of other political traditions has had a profound impact on government and politics. Liberal democracy framed the reference within which the institutions of government were created and sets the parameters within which politics operates. This lucid, concise and distinctive account of the American political system provides students with a broad understanding of the institutions of government, placed within the context of the US political culture.
