Description and Table of Contents

Description

This is the first book on polarized spectroscopy of partially oriented solutes. The purpose is to provide an introduction to those interested in the measurement of the anisotropy of molecular optical properties in the UV, visible or IR regions (one-and two-photon absorption, simultaneous or sequential, luminescence, Raman scattering, natural and magnetic optical activity), or in the determination of uniaxial order and organization in supermolecular assemblies (liquid crystals, stretched polymers and membranes). The orienting effects of radiation (photoselection) are covered as well. The book illustrates in numerous examples the use of the results to solve problems in chemistry, biology, and polymer science. It is written on a level for graduate students who have been exposed to elementary quantum mechanics, optics, and spectroscopy. The preface indicates sections to be skipped by a nonspecialist seeking primarily practical information for a specific application.
