Jowett and O'Donnell examine propaganda and persuasion from a communication perspective. They aim to provide the basis for a value-free evaluation of the role of propaganda in contemporary society. Their approach isolates the communicative variables of the propagandistic message, determines the relationship of the message to its context, examines the responses and responsibilities of the audience, and traces the development of propagandistic communication as a process.
