Description

This introductory account provides the physical background to an understanding of interacting binary stars. These are star systems in which the pair of members is close enough to each other to cause interactions. Several such systems are strong sources of stellar x-rays. The contributions, all by active researchers, concentrate on three areas of current interest which serve to illustrate the problems encountered generally in these binary systems. The topics covered are: binary star evolution, contact binary stars, and cataclysmic variable stars. The book brings a graduate student to the point of being able to start independent research.
