Description
Intended as a reference source for those involved in the practice of blood transfusion, this book describes the current range of therapeutic materials available from transfusion services and the clinical conditions in which they should be used. Transfusion practice is closely interrelated with many other clinical disciplines, such as surgery, medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, haematology, anaesthetics and intensive care, and sections of the book are devoted to discussion of the specific transfusion problems associated with these subjects. Transfusion is costly both in terms of financial and human resources, so economy in the use of materials and the efficient organisation of services are discussed. In addition, the hazards of blood transfusion, so much at the forefront of public concern since the appearance of AIDS, are described. The purpose of the book is to highlight those aspects of blood transfusion practice relevant to the physician responsible for the management of clinical problems, and to provide a comprehensive source of information on blood transfusion services. However it will also be invaluable to trainee haematologists and medical laboratory staff.
