Description and Table of Contents

Volume

v. 5 ISBN 9780195620115

Description

This volume covers the period from 1 January to 6 April 1948. During this period communal tension reached unprecedented levels and resulted in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Though weighed down by personal sorrow, Nehru did not falter in the task of pulling the people back to sanity. He strove to see that the minorities in India received fair treatment, and that the country was not dragged into war with Pakistan, whatever the provocations of the other side and the quibblings of the western powers at the United Nations on the question of Kashmir. As the speeches and writings in this volume reveal, in a short period of time, almost every essential of India's future came under scrutiny and was often under attack. It was Nehru's task to resist the forces of reaction on every front and place the country on the right road. Historians, political scientists, journalists, and students of history and political science.
Volume

v. 10 ISBN 9780195628388

Description

During the ten weeks from 16 February to 30 April 1949 covered in this volume, the Prime Minister was fully absorbed, after the settlement of the disorders immediately after independence, in the work of national reconstruction along with the heavy responsibility of the External Affairs Department. Curtailment of unnecessary expenditure, finding out ways and means to make India self-sufficient in food within a prescribed period, and working for the planned economy were Nehru's major domestic concerns. This volume also brings out the significant role that Nehru played in the highly controversial issue of India continuing as a Republic in the Commonwealth. With great efficiency Nehru tackled resistance at home as well as abroad to India continuing as a member of the Commonwealth while retaining the status as a Republic.
Volume

v. 11 ISBN 9780195628883

Description

During the period from 1 May to 20 June 1949 covered by this volume Jawaharlal Nehru was preoccupied with the tasks of nation-building. He was concerned with improving the economy, particularly food production, the rehabilitation of refugees, the final stages of constitution-making and problems of education and culture. Kashmir remained a problem, but a firm approach improved the general situation. Nehru defended the decision on the continuance of India in the Commonwealth before the Constituent Assembly and before the All-India Congress Committee. In external affairs, the emphasis was on the development of bilateral relations with the great powers as well as the neighbours. This work is aimed at graduate students of history, as well as general readers.

Nehru's correspondence during the period April-July 1950 is primarily concerned with the implementation of the Indo-Pakistan Agreement. The Agreement brought confidence and hope as well as relief to millions in both countries. There was a marked falling off in the exodus both ways in Bengal and Assam and a resumption of trade between India and Pakistan. Other major problems were the rehabilitation of refugees, arrangements for the first general elections, general economic policy, the formation of a new Council of Ministers, shortage of foodgrains, and the control of prices. In foreign affairs, apart from the perennial Kashmir problem, Nehru's attention was engaged primarily by the issues raised by the war in Korea.

Description

In this volume, which covers the period from 21 June to 31 August 1956, Jawaharlal Nehru devotes a great deal of attention to the crisis over the nationalization of the Suez Canal and to other national and internatiional issues. During the Suez crisis, Nehru not only acted in unison with the other key players in the non-aligned movement, but he also positioned India as a key player in world affairs. Nehru s main aim was to see how best India could serve the cause of averting conflict and obtain a peaceful settlement of the dispute. Time and again the Prime Minister talked of self-sufficiency in food and grains as a major target. While agriculture continued to receive priority, the main feature in the Second Five Year Plan was the expansion of heavy industries. Nehru announced at the Commonwealth Prime Minsters Conference in London that his government planned an increase in steel production from about 1.5 million tons to 6 million tons a year. This volume illustates how natio nal unity was a key phrase in Nehru s vocabulary. To preserve that ideal, Parliament adopted the States Reorganization Bill, an extraordinary culmination of the fierce and angry debates and all the upheavals and riots that had taken place during the past many months.

Description

In this volume, which covers a period of 1 September to 30 November 1956, Nehru sheds much fresh light on the critical happenings in the Suez Canal and Hungary. Such was his stature and moral authority that people from Hungary sought his active intervention. His vivid description of Saudi society reveals Nehru s empathy for and understanding of a non-European society. The exchanges on the China-Myanmar dispute and the India-China boundary question enrich our knowledge of certain complex issues that are debated incessantly. On the home front: Nehru had set the best traditions of engagement with the people and their leaders through dialogue and discussions ranging from stability in Kashmir to Second Five Year Plan to the preservation of wildlife to eschew casteism and communalism. On the issue of banning of a book he could not make sense of violence breaking out, people making inflammatory speeches, and newspapers publishing articles to heighten religious passions he pleaded for peace , tolerance and reconciliation.

Description

This volume covers the short period from May 1 1957 to July 31 1957. This volume opens with Jawaharlal Nehru's public speech at the Ramlila Grounds in Delhi on May 10 1957. Nehru recalled how he used to listen to tales of what happened in 1857-58 in Allahabad, Delhi, Lucknow, and other places. These stories make a deep impression on him and filled him with anger. According to Nehru, the great outburst of 1857 was an expression of the people's anger against the British takeover of the country. He did not think it was a coordinated movement: but there was a general feeling of resentment spread over the whole of North India and one spark was enough to ignite a whole conflagration. While the bulk of the collection in this volume deals with "External Affairs," the volume is replete with documents which show Nehru's concern about the issue of food scarcity and shortage of foreign exchange at this point in time. The sections on "Minorities and Weaker Sections" has documents that illustrate Nehru's commitment to a pluralist society.

The documents also underline the importance of industrial development for India's long term progress and how this was to be achieved by the generation of resources internally. Due emphasis was laid on cooperative movement and self-help. The volume discusses Nehru's appointment of the Official Language Commission and his special interest in the northeast India. It also highlights his thinking on issues like disarmament, peaceful-coexistence, Kashmir as well as India's relations with Pakistan. A collection of several speeches throw light on India's heritage, child care, Mahatma Gandhi, and India's future prospects.

Description

Part of the Selected Works of Jawaharlal Nehru series, this volume includes lectures, writings, letters, speeches, and other literary works of Nehru, covering three months of his Prime Ministership, from 1 January to 31 March 1958. It reveals his wide range of interests in both national and international affairs. The first chapter mainly deals with Nehru's approach on areas like the role of the youth, rural development, and social change. The second discusses issues of national progress more particularly his views on economy (industry and labour, food, and agriculture); education and culture; language issues; science and technology; and social issues. An important test for Nehru's leadership came in the form of the infamous LIC scandal called 'The Mundhra Affair' leading to the resignation of the finance minister. The third chapter reflects Nehru's concern on the inquiry into the incident and the role of the attorney general. Issues of governance-general administration, services and appointments, citizenship, refugees and rehabilitation both at the central and state level inform the fifth chapter. The next two chapters deal with issues of defence and parliamentary and constitutional matters respectively. Chapter seven concerns with the Indian National Congress, particularly the Guwahati Session and the organizational matters. The states of Kashmir and Sikkim form the basis of chapters eight and nine respectively. Peace and disarmament were topmost of Nehru's agenda during this period and the large section is devoted to external affairs and foreign relations. Towards the end, the volume discusses issues like Nehru's interaction with the press; his letters to the chief ministers, and some miscellaneous information.

Description

Part of the Selected Works of Jawaharlal Nehru series, this volume includes lectures, writings, letters, speeches, and other literary works of Nehru from1 April to 30 June 1958. The first section mainly deals with how Nehru exhorted the nation to increase productivity and emphasized the role of the community development programme in nation building since the country was faced with shortage of both foreign exchange and food. The second discusses national progress which he envisioned to be in the direction of socialism. The third segment reflects Nehru's concern on the issues of governance. He was quite distressed by casteism, communalism, and the growth of petty politics leading to his announcement on 29 April 1958 of his intention to retire from Prime Ministership. The next two parts deal with defence and parliamentary affairs respectively. The following chapter studies the Indian National Congress. The state of Kashmir form the basis of section seven. In Kashmir, the re-arrest of Sheikh Abdullah made Nehru unhappy but he supported the decision of the state government to proceed against Abdullah. The next focuses on external affairs which was rather worrisome and devoted to India's relationship with Pakistan. Rejecting third-party meditation on Kashmir, Nehru set out the Indian position in negotiations with Pakistan. Towards the end the volume discusses issues like Nehru's interaction with the press; his letters to the chief ministers, and some miscellaneous information.

Description

Part of the Selected Works of Jawaharlal Nehru series, this volume includes lectures, writings, letters, speeches, and other literary works of Nehru from1 July to 31 August 1958. The volume starts with a very important note by Jawaharlal Nehru called 'The Basic Approach'. Here we see Nehru agonizing over the complex issues of the day faced by mankind in general and their implications for India. He goes on to flag major issues concerning democracy, capitalism, freedom of the individual, socialism, planning, land reform, health and education. During the period the world was on the brink of a possible major conflagration on account of multiple crises in West Asia and the intervention of the Great Powers. This led to a flurry of diplomatic activity and Presidents and Prime Ministers of all major nations corresponded with him on this issue. Incursions and firings by Pakistan across the eastern border and India-China boundary question continued to trouble Nehru. On the domestic front, food scarcity and inflation, due to drought and floods particularly in north and east India, posed a major challenge. The need to import food impacted adversely the foreign exchange reserves of the country which was already short of funds to finance the Second Five Year Plan. Nehru was quite disturbed and distressed by the developments in Kerala. Amidst all these problems, Nehru found time to spell out the government's policy on the promotion, protection of Urdu. He also instructed the cabinet secretary to streamline the procedures, reduce the size and improve the efficiency of the administrative machinery. He also explained his views on the position and role of the Governor, education, cooperatives, community development schemes and the need to enhance productivity. This book will interest scholars, teachers, and students of modern Indian history, politics, economics, and all those interested in the Nehruvian era and international relations.
