Description and Table of Contents

Description

Sir Henry Holland was one of Victorian London's most celebrated physicians and tireless travellers. He showed all the Icelandophile enthusiasms of his time: a perception of unrivalled medieval literary achievements, a keen enjoyment of the sublimities of the scenery, and a scientific curiosity about Iceland's mineralogical legacy. He writes of all these, but also portrays a society gripped by privation resulting from the Napoleonic wars.
