The Clearing-House Directory informs epidemiologists and others interested about current work in the field of cancer epidemiology. Investigators in 71 countries have contributed to the 1986 Directory, which contains 1352 projects. While the USA and the UK are still by far the largest contributors, Europe and China have increased their contributions. There has been remarkably little change in the sites studied throughout the years:The lung is still the most common, followed by the stomach and female breast. The possible role of modifiers of carcinogenesis is receiving growing attention, and investigations of factors considered to be protective, such as certain vitamins, have been engendered in several countries. The number of intervention studies continues to increase. This issue sees the appearance for the first time of projects on molecular epidemiology. Projects in the field of mutation epidemiology have been included, as well as a listing of biological material banks and their holdings. Tables giving information on funds expended on epidemiological cancer research by various institutes and registries, which appeared in the 1985 Directory, have been repeated.
A list of population-based cancer registries is also included. Access to the information in the book is facilitated by extensive indexes (by investigator, key-word, cancer site, chemical, occupation, study type, place where data are being collected). Inclusion of full names and address of the principal investigator in each entry, together with telephone and telex numbers when available facilitates contacts between research workers.
