This is the first in an informal series of short didactic books for trainee and junior histopathologists. The text is designed to be a practical manual and provides visual information on what pathologists see in day-to-day practice. It aims to demonstrate the differences (and similarities) that are seen when the same tumour type is examined in smears, cryostat sections and paraffin sections. Correlations are made between these various appearances and intrinsic tumour structure, and those features that are of value in arriving at a diagnosis are emphasized. Consideration is given to common and less common neoplasms, as well as some lesions (frequently cystic) which, although not neoplastic, are frequently present as tumours in neurosurgical practice. All the material illustrated is derived from diagnostic biopsies and is representative fo the kind of preparations on which diagnoses will be made. Although primarily intended for pathologists, the work should also be of interest to neurosurgeons and radiotherapists, both experienced and in training.
