内容説明
This volume comprises Russell's shorter writings against British participation in World War 1 for the period from the outbreak of the conflict in August 1914 to the formation of the Lloyd George coalition government in December 1916. This collection of theoretical and practical pacifist writings records Russell's critique of the British Liberal Party and documents the stages in his move towards the Independent Labour Party. His prominent role in the Union of Democratic control is also explored. Russell's hostility to conscription led him to active involvement with the No-conscription Fellowship, although this volume shows that by the autumn of 1916 he had concluded that conscientious objectors were not going to stop the war. He was, however, committed to tireless efforts to convince his countrymen to agitate for an immediate and fair peace. Documents bearing on the continuing government attempts to harrass Russell are also recorded.
