内容説明

Despite the fact that both the scope of industrial development and the pace of it are dominated by large firms, small and medium firms have also played an important role in the industrialization process in both developed and developing countries. The development strategy of the newly industrializing countries is to allow multinational corporations to operate in their countries in order to gain access to technology, capital and world markets. Small firms, which are also local firms, are consequently relegated to a supporting role in the economy - indeed, in Singapore, local firms are subcontracting to the multinationals. The purpose of this study is to analyze the contribution of small-sized and medium-sized firms in the industrial development of Singapore and to assess the role they can play in the manufacturing sector in the future. A comparative chapter on small firms in Taiwan, Thailand and Japan reveals that the contribution of small firms is dependent on the stage of industrial development, as well as the extent of government assistance to small firms in the respective countries.
