内容説明

In tracing the career of Sir Charles Addis (1861-1945) the author attempts to show the co-operative effort of the City, the British government and the Bank of England to protect the Empire against the American challenge in the period between the wars. Addis's career began in Hong Kong during the high-tide of the British Empire and ended as World War II confirmed the American ascendancy. As London manager of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, Director of the Bank of England, Representative of the British Treasury at the Genoa Conference of 1922 and the Reparations Conference of 1929, Addis sought to preserve and protect British imperial influence. As an organizer of the China Banking Consortium, Cabinet Advisor on Far Eastern Affairs, and founding member of Chatham House, he advocated international co-operation and worked for world peace. Roberta Allbert Dayer is also the author of "Bankers and Diplomats in China, 1917-1925".
