Description
The invention of the thyristor (a semiconductor device with excellent power-handling capability) in 1957 led to revolutionary progress in electric power conversion and control, and has established a new technology known as "power electronics". The basis of power electronics is the repetitive switching of electric power using devices such as the thyristor and the power transistor; the desired output can then be obtained with high efficiency using pulse modulation technology. The first half of this book, which is written for electrical, electronic and mechanical engineers in both industry and academic research, introduces the basic concepts of power electronics, and describes the various semiconductor devices used, and the basic circuits that are employed. In the second half, the authors deal with the many applications of power electronics such as control of underground trains, precision control of robot arms, and the provision of uninterruptible power supplies for computers.
