Henry Harris, one of the world's most distinguished cell biologists, is the Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford. In this book he gives an engrossing account of what it is like to be an experimental scientist. After graduating in medicine in a still-colonial Australia, he went to Oxford, where, with one brief interlude, he has remained for the rest of his working life. There he has been engaged in an unremitting series of experiments, year in, year out, wrestling with the problems of the cell - problems that are the key to some of the most important questions in medical research.
