Description

This book is the proceedings of an International Symposium in April 1987 concerned with the biochemistry of the algae and cyanobacteria. It covers topics such as the flexibility and variety of algal metabolism, bioergenetics, metabolic control, extracellular products and aspects of biotechnology. Chapters are contributed by scientists distinguished for their researches in these topics, and include reviews of studies with marine macroalgae, as well as the microalgae and the prokaryotic cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). Individual topics extend from osmoregulation, uptake and utilization of nitrogenous compounds, lipid metabolism, tetrapyrrole biosynthesis, photosynthesis, respiratory electron transfer, nitrogen fixation, enzyme regulation, cyanobacterial storage bodies, algal-invertebrate sympbioses, nutrient interaction in the marine environment, production of antimicrobial compounds and toxins, and biotechnology of micro- and macro-algae.
