This, the first of four volumes on Oliver Cromwell, covers the period from his birth in 1599 to the trial and execution of Charles I in January 1649. The earlier part of the book traces Cromwell's origins and his upbringing as the son of a Huntingdonshire squire; the emergence of his Puritan faith; and the apprenticeship which, as an opponent of the Crown's policies, he served in Parliament and in local politics. His rise to national prominence was achieved by his victories in the Civil War, particularly those at the Battles of Marston Moor and Naseby, and by his leadership of the New Model Army. These events are examined, together with his conflicts with the Levellers and the army radicals in the period surrounding the Putney debates of 1647. The final chapter covers his attempts to secure a post-war settlement with the king and his eventual decision to abandon conciliation and to carry out the regicide, the event which made possible his own assumption of power.

This work covers the period 1649 to 1653 and comprises both a biography of Cromwell and an edition of his letters and speeches. It begins with the abolition of the monarchy and the House of Lords in 1649, and ends in 1653 with Cromwell's expulsion of the "Rump", the remnant of the House of Commons left behind by Pride's Purge in December 1648. Between 1649 and 1651 Cromwell achieved some of his most famous and decisive victories - the merciless crushing of the Irish at Drogheda and Wexford and the defeat of the Scots at Dunbar and Worcester. The campaigns which produced these victories are described, as is the deterioration of Cromwell's relations with the Long Parliament which followed his return to politics at Westminster in 1651. The Rump's refusal to grant the religious, social and parliamentary reforms demanded by the army finally provoked Cromwell to destroy the parliament which had fought against Charles 1 and to take the Puritan Revolution into unchartered constitutional territory.

This third volume on Oliver Cromwell comprises both a biography of Cromwell and an edition of his letters and speeches. It covers the years 1653-1655 tracing Cromwell's emergence as the ruler of his country and as an international statesman. In December 1653, after the collapse of the Barebones Parliament, Cromwell became Lord Protector under a new constitution designed by the army. This book examines Cromwell's failure to win assent for that constitution from the parliament of 1654 and describes the royalist plotting which led to the rising under Colonel Penruddock in March 1655. The insurrection prompted Cromwell to entrust the government of the regions to his Major-Generals, in whose rule the military character of the Protectorate was at its most obvious. Abroad, a series of hard-won treaties, with France and with Protestant powers, paved the way for the war with Spain which began in 1655. The volume ends at a point when Cromwell perhaps enjoyed greatest power, but the least support.

This volume covers the last three years of Cromwell's life from the autumn of 1655 to his death in September 1658, and comprises both a biography and an edition of his letters and speeches. Throughout this time he ruled as Protector, although he seemed to come close to taking the crown during the "kingship" crisis of 1657, when parliament, by replacing the instrument of government by the more traditional constitution of the Humble Petition, demonstrated that a conservative reaction was emerging in Cromwell's last years. Abroad, England's war with Spain produced Blake's exploits in the Mediterranean and the capture of Dunkirk for the English by the Anglo-French force. At home, the problem of giving stability and constitutional respectability to Puritan rule remained unresolved. Material for this work has been gathered from foreign archives, and Cromwell's own writings and speeches have been used in an attempt to provide an insight into the personality of this most complex character.
